This is Shila Ghosh, an 81 year old lady who comes each day from far away to the Exide intersection. She is absolutely bent over – very, very stooped, and walks very slowly. She never asks for money but sells pasta, chips, and snack foods from a large sack that she hauls into town each day.
She is a widow who raised her kids and got them set up in life. She built a home for them, too. But her daughter threw her out and seized the whole house. She helps eke out a living along with her son and daughter-in-law by selling these products….
I can’t see Shila without weeping on the inside. Many, even if they buy nothing from her, insist on pressing cash into her hand. Her story is sadly, very sadly, not unique. And in a country like India – with no social security, no support network, really, for the aged indigent…well, it’s like my Dolly says – "Old age is not for cowards." I say that goes double for Shila!
This appeared in today’s Hindustan Times newspaper…
I can’t say thing… Wordless!
very pity indeed.
Yeah even I have bought packets of chips unnecessarily only to support this lady. Atleast she is not like the one who sits at the corner of Camac street. That lady begs to eat pan!!!!
