Frozen History

Christopher Taylor, a resident of UK, is showcasing a wonderful selection of black and white photographs of old buildings in Bombay and Calcutta. The exhibition is on until 6th January — that’s this Sunday — and you really should take a look.

Housed in an old building off Rashbehari, it’s very easy to find. From the Kalighat Metro exit, facing Gariahat (i.e. you’ll be heading east) walk for about 30 seconds and take the first left, after an Axis bank, an ICICI bank ATM and a photography shop. Walk down the lane for another minute until you see the big banner to your left.

The exhibition is being held in an old building which perfectly complements the subjects of the photographs. The photographs themselves, or at least the ones taken in Calcutta, should be familiar to most of our explorers. The ones taken in Butto Kristo Pal’s house, of the Standard Life Assurance building and of the Coffee House on College Street are particularly speaking to one who has stood in these same spaces, looking from the same points of view as taken by the camera.

Thanks, Explorer Ritesh, for the tip-off.

When you head back to Rashbehari, don’t forget to try out the alu’r dum sold at a stall in front of the Metro exit where you started out.
